Back pain often occurs due to spinal issues. The spine is made up of 24 small bones called vertebrae that are surrounded by cushion-like discs that absorb pressure and ensure the bones don’t rub against each other. The spine also features ligaments holding the vertebrae together, tendons connecting muscles to the vertebrae, and facet joints that provide flexibility to the vertebrae. Funneled between the holes of each vertebra is the spinal cord with nerve roots extending from it.
Back pain is often the result of structural problems to one or multiple parts of the spinal column and is more common in older people. That’s because, due to the natural aging process, the discs between each vertebra degenerates, the spinal canal narrows, the cartilage between facet joints breaks down, and the vertebrae themselves become weaker. Back pain can also happen due to an injury, a car accident, improper lifting habits, and other less-common causes.
When you consult with Dr. Venis for back pain treatment, he will review your medical history, learn about your lifestyle habits, and complete a thorough spinal examination. If necessary, he will order imaging scans to get the complete picture of your back pain. Then, he will develop a treatment plan to help you start feeling better. Dr. Venis uses a wide range of chiropractic therapies to help his patients, including manual spinal adjustments, massage therapy, the Cox flexion-distraction method, the Activator instrument method, and more.
