A trigger point is a tight area of muscle tissue that can cause sharp spasms, dull aches, tightness, and other painful symptoms. Trigger points can be found in your neck, shoulders, back, buttocks, arms, and legs, and are a very common cause of pain. At Back & Neck Pain Center in Clearwater, Florida, we offer evaluation and various treatments for trigger points. Trigger point therapy may consist of trigger point massage and/or myofascial release, anti-inflammatory cream, heat or cold therapy, ultrasound, and chiropractic spinal manipulation.
Myofascial trigger points can form due to a variety of activities, such as overusing a muscle, poor posture, and repeatedly clenching and tightening muscles because of stress. Those who lead sedentary lifestyles are also more prone to trigger points. Furthermore, a trigger point can arise from direct injury, such as a strain, break, or tear.
Trigger points can also cause referred pain, which is when a trigger point that originates in one area of the body causes pain in a different area. For example, a trigger point in the shoulder can cause neck pain and headaches.
At Back & Neck Pain Center, we provide trigger point therapy from an experienced chiropractor, Dr. Venis. He’s been helping clients find relief from their pain since 1982, and he will deliver the individualized treatment you deserve. After learning about your symptoms and your medical history, Dr. Venis will then examine your area to complaint to determine if you have any trigger points. If any are located, he will then discuss his findings with you as well as your treatment options. As always, he will answer any questions you have about his recommendations.
Some patients may find relief from their pain after just one treatment, although multiple treatments may be required depending on the type of injury, length of time the patient has been experiencing pain, overall health of the patient, and other factors. It’s also not uncommon for patients to find relief from other chronic pain conditions after trigger point therapy, especially if their trigger points have caused referred pain.
